Monopoli - The city of "a hundred blocks"
Monopoli is a city in the province of Bari, located 45 km south-east of Bari, reachable by car along the SS16.
Its territory has been inhabited since 5th century B.C. by the people of Messapi, creating a fortified village and quickly became one of the major harbours of the Adriatic coast.
Monopoli is called the "The city of "a hundred blocks" for rural areas outside built-up areas, intertwined by monumental quarters which have the names of farmhouses, masserie and patrician villas, surrounded by many olive groves, almond and fruit trees. The centre is full of monuments and religious buildings such as the Cathedral of the Madonna della Madia and the Church of Santa Maria del Suffragio-Purgatorio, while the Vittorio Emanuele Square is the centre of the social life of Monopoli, lively and constantly animated. Monopoli boasts a very characteristic historical centre where you can stroll through enchanting alleys leading to the Ancient Harbouron the once fortified 'wall' (called Muraglia) where the ramparts and the Carlo V CastleThe city hosts many cultural and religious festivalsas the re-enactment of miracles of Our Lady of the Madia in August or the Saint Lucia fair each last month of the year.
