The city of Sassi (stones)
Matera, the city of Sassi, is a small jewel carved into the mountains, a place where time seems to have stopped and the surroundings seem painted.
Matera has conquered photographers and film-makers. It has a unique charm, a complex beauty, which can only be found by crossing the narrow alleys of the historic center and observing the houses carved into the tufa. A city with a delicate relationship with the surrounding nature, a surprising open-air museum.
European Capital of Culture 2019, its Sassi, declared a Unesco Heritage Site, are rich in history.
There's plenty to see: from its famous churches to the little rocky ones, equally beautiful, from the huge central square, where in the center of which there is an archaeological site, to the belvedere overlooking the ancient village made up of stone houses.
Moving around Matera is like living again in a forgotten past. When you visit this suggestive Lucanian city the sensation is that of entering a nativity scene, in fact it is also called "the second Bethlehem".
