Tour of Alberobello: here's what to see in a day
The beauty of Alberobello is wandering among the trulli and visiting the museums, such as the Trullo Sovrano.
Many trulli are used as shops or are open to the public, so it will be easy to take a peek inside and get an idea of how they are made inside.
The Basilica of Saints Cosmas and Damian cannot be missed on your tour of Alberobello, and by crossing Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, you reach Largo Martellotta, a broad street that marks the so-called Rione Monti: the most characteristic district of Alberobello and the area with the highest concentration of trulli. The Rione is named because each street in the neighborhood is named after one of the mountains where battles were fought during World War I.
Not far from the Monti District, we find the Aia Piccola District: a smaller neighborhood, entirely made of trulli, where it is still possible to savor the slow and peaceful life of the past.
Once you reach Piazza 27 Maggio, you can visit the Museum of the Territory, where you can discover the history and transformation of the Murgese landscape. The neighborhood takes its name from this square, where an area for collecting the dues owed to the feudal lord was located in ancient times.
What to see in Alberobello and the surrounding area
Once you have finished the city tour, you can continue exploring the trulli scattered throughout the countryside. You could rent a bicycle, for example, which allows you to easily reach anywhere you want and visit places far from the center.
You can explore the rural territory of Alberobello, once vibrant and now rich in traces of peasant civilization. Here you will find ancient and original architectural elements of the trulli: platform chimneys, alcoves, recesses for raised beds, and solid wood double doors. These details, remnants of a fascinating past, will add a romantic touch to your stroll.
Heading south, you will reach the natural oasis of Bosco Selva, the green lung of the city. This urban park, covering about 40 hectares, features a small playground for children, benches and picnic tables, and equipped trails for outdoor walks. Bosco Selva is one of the two Sites of Community Importance in Alberobello, hosting numerous specimens of protected flora. It is the ideal place to spend an afternoon of peace and tranquility.
What to see in Alberobello before leaving?
What you absolutely must see before leaving Alberobello?
Climb the steep stairs that start from Largo Matteotti up to the Church of Santa Lucia: you are entering the Aia Piccola District! Right next to the Church of Santa Lucia, you will find the famous and homonymous Santa Lucia Terrace, one of the most beautiful viewpoints over the Monti District.
But Alberobello is not just trulli!
Tradition and the true essence of the south are contained in a unique place, isolated from time, where you can unplug from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The rural and agricultural tradition is also experienced through local food and wine. You can enjoy specialties such as extra virgin olive oil, wine, taralli, peperoni cruschi, orecchiette, panzerotti, and typical sweets. These authentic flavors represent just a few of the delicacies of this fantastic territory.
So, if you're tired of walking, want to take a moment to relax, and try a journey through the scents and colors of this land before you leave, we recommend one of our food and wine experiences, discovering the oldest wineries in Alberobello: Trulli and Wine
